Facts about Teeth Whitening

External stains  through consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, smoking or just through natural aging and medication can cause your teeth to discolor with time. How do you decide which whitening products to use . Here are the facts you need to know before you commit.

Clinical studies have shown that whitening your teeth with carbamide or hydrogen peroxide under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for teeth and gums.

The most common side effect is tooth and gum sensitivity. Our dentists will assess your teeth and inform you if you are a good candidate for whitening.

At The Rodney Dental we use the latest whitening product which has taken the USA by storm the Philips Zoom Day White and Nite White.

They offer a superior at home whitening for a visible whiter smile in one day and your whitest healthier smile in seven to fourteen days. Philips zoom at home whitening products have two mild desensitizing agents, Potassium Nitrate and Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP), to minimize tooth sensitivity.

Procedure for Tooth whitening

We start by taking the shade of your teeth so we have a starting reference and a comparison with the end result.

Impressions are taken which are sent off to the laboratory for custom made trays. These trays are design to hold saliva out and the gel enclosed around your teeth for a more productive whitening result.

Once the trays are fitted in the second visit we demonstrate how to wear them and use the gel accordingly to your specific needs.

With Zoom at home, when used as instructed, you will achieve a great result in one two weeks, depending on concentration of formulation and wear time you select.

Everyone response differently to whitening and sensitivity is sometimes a side effect of whitening treatments. A sensitive toothpaste like Fluoridex before and after your treatment can be recommended.

Home whitening will produce a whiter longer lasting result than in surgery whitening. You can carry on whitening at your own discretion as it is not a permanent result and requires top up every 12-18 months depending on your habits such as drinking coffee, tea, red wine.

For continued stain removal and your healthiest teeth and gums, look for a power toothbrush like Sonicare or Oral B. They’ve proven to whiten teeth and remove plaque better than manual brushes.
